Why not? Kids are better than adults at computer games and at the end of the day an ATC is simply playing a huge computer game.

With the potential for a large number of real deaths.

All these ATC interactions are taped. On the tapes, it's very clear that the father tells the kid what to say, and at no time does the kid get to say takeoff or airport navigation issues. It was an innocent thing, but the FAA is going balls deep over it.

As if it's the first time it's ever happened.

As if it hasn't happened on the pilots' sides as well, when pilots bring their own kids into the cockpit. ("Do you like gladiator movies...")

The only reason the FAA is going balls deep on this one is that it became public. The FAA is far less concerned with safety than it is with avoiding humiliation.

He still should have been fired. If I am a pilot trying to land a plane full of people, I don't want some stupid fucking kid's voice coming over the radio telling me what to do. Am I supposed to hope that his dad told him correctly ? Hope that he relayed it to me correctly ?

It's BS, guys - never should have happened. Seems each of these controlers should know what world they are living in. I say he needs to be canned and put on no-rehire status. Let him get a sanitation job and take his fucking kid to work with him.

Good luck with that. The ATC people for ZNY (the entire New York/New Jersey air region) are the sharpest in the nation. There's more air traffic through ZNY on a slow night than in Chicago-Midway/O'Hare on a busy one.

And NATCA (National Air Traffic Controllers Association), their union, which sprung up after PATCO got busted by Reagan, will have a lot to say about this. Publicly, they'll chastize the ATC but privately I doubt they'll put up with anything more drastic than moving him out of JFK and putting him in another airport or TRACON.

When Reagan broke PATCO, I applauded - but now that I work with the ATCs, TRACONs, and other air facilities, and have seen for myself what the FAA tries to ram down people's throats, especially the throats of the flying public, the ATCs need all the protection they can get. THESE people are the reason you're safe in the air, not the FAA.

I might know who this ATC is, the one with the kid. I think I've talked with him, although talking with an ATC while he's on the job varies between being hysterically funny and deeply annoying. Their conversations are like Yep, Nope, Gotta go.

Two quick points:

PATCO "broke" themselves by violating their contract and going on strike, as far as I remember. Love to give Ronnie credit but they precipitated this themselves....

And when you said "THESE people are the reason you're safe in the air, not the FAA" I was nodding my head in agreement, which is why this guy should be fired. Too important a job to be fucking around with. Hell, I would fire him just for being stupid enough to risk this job over that B.S., but who knows where he will end up.

Isn't air travel scary enough nowadays wondering who's waiting to blow up the plane without having some knob in the tower letting his kid even talk to pilots. No wonder I hate flying. angry.gif

Rugby, I know this guy shouldn't have even let his kid INTO the tower, never mind let him talk to the pilots. But I also know this isn't the first time it's happened - things like this happen a lot. Pilots let their kids into the cockpits.... and sometimes let them "fly" the plane (while it's on autopilot of course).

AF, there's no reason at all to be scared of what the air traffic controllers do. Most of these guys have been doing this a long time, and they're a smart and talented bunch. Yep, some of the newer ones suck, but even they don't suck to the point of crashing planes. (Mostly.) In my job, I watch a subsystem of the ATC/FAA, so I can see how many thousands of planes are in the air at any given moment. And I can also see how careful the system is behind the planes, how the ATC designs "air routes" so that the planes are widely separated either in height or distance between them, or both. I've even learned how the ATC will get the FAA to slow traffic down while it's in the air to maintain long distances between planes. Air traffic is one of the safest ways to travel, and once you see all the work that's behind that, you realize just how safe it is.

That being said, I'm so terrified of flying that I rarely fly either. But I'm not afraid of a crash - I'm afraid the bottom will fall out of the plane. It's a total insane phobia - when I fly, the bottoms of my feet hurt from bracing against the floor. (I have no idea why I think that will do any good.) laugh.gif
