Pa. man dies during storm when 911 calls unheeded

Pittsburgh officials have ordered new emergency procedures since a 50-year-old man died during a snowstorm last month - two days after he began making the first of 10 calls to the city's 911 center.

Ambulances were dispatched to the rowhome of Curtis Mitchell and his girlfriend Sharon Edge but the drivers could get no closer in the snow than a quarter mile away. Paramedics told Mitchell he'd have to walk to the ambulances - and his abdominal pain was so severe, he couldn't.

Now the city says emergency responders must go to the door of a 911 caller, no matter what.

Public Safety director Michael Huss says Mitchell may have survived if he had been carried out to the ambulance. An investigation is under way and six ambulance medics could be disciplined.

I have never heard of that! When you are dispatched on an emergency...you do not tell the patient to meet you half way!!! If they could, they would not need emergency services.

Everyone involved needs to be fired!!!

Not sure about that.

My cousin Joe's wife had a major heart attack about 10 or more years back, during one of those huge up-state New York snowstorms. The rescue crews couldn't get there - roads not plowed, houses inaccessible. She died.

Wasn't nobody's fault, wasn't nothing else that could be done.

I am very sorry about that.

You would think living in an area prone to harsh winters they would have equipment for such cases.

Here they will bring out a snowplow or someone in a 4-wheel driveis always ready for such a case. I have even seen them bring out farm tractors to help.

Seems to me, that the ambulance crew saved the state thousands in payouts to nonproductive members of the city. I saw the wife on the news, and a couple of the kids.

When my cousin-in-law died under similar circumstances.... the nation lost a physicist, and a very intelligent one at that.

So it's not just poor people who get screwed. My cousin Joe had to sit there with her dead body for another two days, until they got plowed out.

(Hmmm.... I wonder if maybe there was a little necroph8ilia going on.) (Thank God my cousin knows nothing about this website.)

The area I lived in NY had a fourwheel drive club called the Mud ducks. They ferry Docs and nurses to and from the local hospitols and Meals on wheels for the elderly.
